Puerto Rico: Convenient Yet Exotic

Depending on where you live on the east coast of the United States, you can expect a flight between two and five hours before you reach Puerto Rico’s pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. Forest System. No matter what you hope to accomplish during your stay on this beautiful island, you won’t be disappointed.

For the water lovers

With nearly 300 miles of breathtaking beaches, Puerto Rico offers every imaginable watersport and plenty of spots to relax on its picture-perfect shores. There are some who even consider the northwest side of the island to be the undisputed surfing capital of the Caribbean.

If your goal is to see a wide array of ocean dwellers, then this place is for you! There are whale watching tours, world-famous snorkeling, and scuba diving excursions where you might encounter manatees or sea turtles, plus deep-sea and fly fishing.

Puerto Rico’s Mosquito Bay was even recognized by Guinness World Records as being the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world.

For the adventure seekers

Certainly, a lush rainforest is not something most Americans have experienced before. El Yunque National Rainforest is one of the top destinations to visit in Puerto Rico. Its mountainous terrain lends itself to some spectacular waterfalls, natural pools, and zip-line parks. Whether you prefer one-of-a-kind hiking or an off-road adventure, El Yunque is not to be missed.

If your time spent in the rainforest isn’t enough adventure for you, there is an abundance of caves to explore. You might even get to do some rock climbing, rappelling, or rafting. There are also countless nature reserves and wildlife refuges throughout Puerto Rico.

For the history buffs

Puerto Rico is rich in culture and history where famous forts, museums, landmarks, and archeological sites abound. Legend has it, the town of Coamo in south-central Puerto Rico is where Juan Ponce de Leon sought the fountain of youth for its healthful hot springs.

For the entertainment enthusiasts

I’m willing to bet you’ve sipped on a piña colada either as a child with no alcohol or as an adult in all its rummy-glory. But did you know that Puerto Rico is the birthplace of this famous tropical drink? I can only imagine how delicious they are on the island, considering there are several distilleries there, including Bicardí.

Puerto Rico is also known for its international cuisine and delicious local dishes, like mofongo and lechón asado, that offer a fusion of Spanish, African, and Indigenous influences.

After a stellar meal at a local restaurant or at your resort, you can head out for some evening entertainment at the casinos, nightclubs or dance the night away while listening to live Latin music.

For the golfers

I would be remiss if I did not include Puerto Rico’s championship-caliber golf courses in this island overview. Dubbed the “golf capital of the Caribbean” Puerto Rico’s courses offer dramatic oceanviews or serene rainforest backdrops. It also hosts an official stop on the PGA Tour at the Coco Beach Golf Club – The Puerto Rico Open.

Something for everyone

Puerto Rico has something to offer everyone. With its year-round tropical weather and an average temperature of 82 degrees, it is certainly in my Top 5 destinations to explore next. What about you?

I have completed Puerto Rico’s Travel Expert Master’s Program and am ready to help you plan an incredible vacation to this U.S. Territory.
